Post-operative pain medications
Anesthesia only provides pain relief while pets are asleep on the surgery table. Pets given post-operative pain-relief medications eat sooner and heal faster. Although Ace of Spays provides a dose of pain relief medication that lasts 6-8 hours, it is recommended that extra pain-relief products are purchased to go home. Clients can chose between homeopathic and conventional products. Do not use over-the-counter products. Some are toxic to pets and all increase the propensity to bleed. Conventional Medications Buprinex is dispensed for cats and very small dogs. It is applied to the gums and cannot be used in pets that are difficult to handle. Tramadol is used for larger dogs. This is a small pill that can be placed in the food or administered by mouth. On rare occasions, these products can cause sedation. A 3-day supply is dispensed. Homeopathy Traumeel includes remedies for pain relief and for healing in dogs and cats. It can be given by mouth or placed in the food. A 5-day supply is dispensed and can be shared between 2 pets.
