Why Pain Medications?
|

|
Research shows that pets that receive pain-relief medications after surgery eat sooner and heal faster than those that do not. Anesthesia only provides pain-relief while pets are asleep on the surgery table. At Ace of Spays, all pets receive a dose of conventional pain-relief medication that lasts 6-8 hours post-operatively. Extra veterinary-approved medications can be purchased to go home. Clients can chose between homeopathic and conventional products.
Why not use over-the-counter products?
Some are toxic to pets and all increase the propensity to bleed.
What are my options?
Conventional Medications
The conventional medication Dr. Cobb has chosen for cats and very small dogs is buprinex. This product is applied to the pets gums and cannot be used in pets that are difficult to handle. Dr. Cobb dispenses tramadol for larger dogs. This is a small pill that is pre-cut for the size of the pet. Because these are strong drugs, a 3-day supply is offered. This is more than adequate time for pain-relief after spay/neuter surgery. On rare occasions, these products cause mild sedation.
Homeopathy
The homeopathic product, Traumeel, is supplied in a 1/2 oz dropper bottle. This product includes remedies for pain-relief and for healing and can be used in both dogs and cats. The drops can be put in the food of pets that are difficult to handle. A 5 day supply is sent home. One bottle can be shared between 2 pets.
